/Architecture library open toward the city showcasing the activity of reading/
-4th Prize winner from Looking forward competition organized by Athenaeum of Philadelphia
Based on the assumption about the perpetuity of reading activity and the preservation of athenaeum as an important public venue in the historical district, one of the possible form of athenaeum in 2050 can be shaped not only by prospecting technological developments, but by reconsidering the small factors of good reading environments based upon thorough considerations of the site with more adaptability toward upcoming innovations. By activated visual connections with surroundings through the northwest facade opening toward Washington Square Park, the new athenaeum will celebrate, showcase the inside activities and stimulate general public’s hidden appetites to read. The rest of the facade remains solid stone maintaining the heaviness matching with surrounding architecture.
• MAIN READING SPACE
Inside the visually open glazed facade, there will be a grand stepped reading space borrowing the exterior greens cape for individual readers inside to provide open views & relaxed reading environments. On the south side of it, there will be 4 story high main feature book-stacks providing core circulations around main programmed spaces and subtle daylights utilizing its porosity as a major spine of the library. This grand reading space interacting with outside will convey a positive stimulus toward the city by showcasing the activity of reading.
• AUTOMATED BOOK DELIVERY SYSTEM
Like we search information in the internet, thousands of valuable architecture books will be physically sorted and distributed to various locations of the library by digital book search system.
• SKYLIGHT
To establish an optimum reading space, skylight above will bounce indirect daylight toward the space below with articulated ceiling surfaces and create spatial aesthetics as an architecture library.
• ARCHI-VIRTUAL JOURNEY PROGRAM WITH 3D HOLOGRAM TECHNOLOGY
In the stepped central reading space, the level of architectural experience will be enhanced beyond images periodically by Archi-Virtual Journey program utilizing far more advanced 3D hologram technology in 2050.
• ROOF GARDEN
On the rooftop level, the sloped green roof & wood deck will provide not only active exterior reading space, but also increased building energy efficiency by the decreased heating & cooling load and rainwater harvesting system embedded throughout a year.
• ENERGY EFFICIENT FACADE DESIGN
Because the Main glazed facade of the proposed athenaeum is facing the west orientation, it will be consisted of triple glazing with automatic operable gradient vertical louver system to block the low evening sun from the west.
