Serving more than 20,000 students, Hillsboro School District prides itself in providing an inclusive environment for all students to excel. To promote continued academic excellence amidst community growth, the district hired DLR Group to design a prototype elementary for three sites focused on the guiding principles of Flexibility, Equity, Community, Outdoor Learning, Daylighting and Student-Centric. The subsequent design for Atfalati Ridge Elementary School is organized on a compact footprint that maximizes natural daylight and creates a 21st century learning environment that supports and inspires students. The Learning Street, a special feature, is naturally lit via a continuous clerestory, and blends both civic and educational programming. Inspired by creating a connection to local biophilic experiences, the interior design concept draws upon powerful and sculptural forms, which give movement and energy to the Learning Street. A mixture of active and quiet spaces fosters various forms of engagement for students, staff, and the community.
Similar to other Hillsboro elementary schools, Atfalati Ridge has the capacity to serve approximately 600 students in kindergarten through 6th grade. The 73,700 SF seismically-safe prototype design is centered around safety and security. Building organization places public areas of the building toward the front entry to maximize students’ safety and encourages zoned after-hours use by the community. Twenty-two classrooms, clustered in pods with direct access to shared learning commons are located on the quiet “pastoral” side of the site and encourage grade-level collaboration and community. Furthermore, the prototype design establishes the district’s standards for gender-neutral restrooms to promote equity and inclusion. In addition, solar panels will offset operational costs. New site work includes a storm water management system, hard and soft surface play, covered play, an entry plaza, an outdoor learning area, and efficient vehicular circulation. DLR Group provided architectural, electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering, and interior design services.
