This artist’s studio is placed on a large parcel of land on which the main house and stables already existed. The new building is set on the ground level in a corner of the site so as to preserve most of the existing garden. Its finished height of 2.5 m along the plot limit rises at a 30% slope to reach 5.5 m at the highest part, giving the users the greatest possible clear height in the volumetric envelope allowed by the local zoning laws. To contrast with the existing main house and its highly ornamental facade, the new volume is without frills; its facades are either glazed or clad with anthracite-gray-painted wood siding. A system of fixed and movable horizontal wood slats protects the large glazed surfaces from overheating and creates a screened closure with respect to the exterior.
