Sitting atop a mountain ridgeline overlooking vast
city and surrounding canyons that can be see over a 300 degree angle, this home
seeks to take advantage of the views by exposing the internal living spaces to
the outside. The client’s program expressed a desire for the house to float
above the city and take advantage of the views with a master suite as the focus,
maximize the buildable volume on the relatively small lot, and provide an open
flowing three dimensional space plan.
Spaces are organized along a central axis that
extends through the house both front to back and vertically. Upon front entry
one’s view is straight through the house to the rear over a zero-edge pool and
out into conservancy mountain range. As one moves along this axis the volume opens
to above that becomes an interior atrium through which the vertical circulation
occurs. Each interior space of the home is defined by a series of planes
dictated by the central open volume on the interior and ever-opening glass
boxes to the exterior. The exterior takes shape by contributing wood and stucco
clad horizontal planes and overhangs that shield the glass boxes underneath.
From lower level solid massing, the home becomes more open as one moves vertically
and horizontally through the spaces. Moving horizontally the side gradually
opens to the view. Moving vertically the rear reveals even more view. As one
arrives at the third floor master suite the entire view range can be
experienced.
