Forward Thinking
This New York asset management firm doubled the size of its space upon its relocation to the Plaza District Submarket of Manhattan with a focus on creating an open, loft-like environment with nature-inspired elements and the latest technology. Seeking to provide a comfortable atmosphere to balance out high-tech installations, MKDA translated the firm’s vision of humility and high-class services into a workplace that is both warm and unassuming while also progressive with state-of-the-art technology.
The project team inventively utilized wood plank flooring in various tones and textures to wrap entry closets and to create contrasting pilasters within the five glass office fronts at the perimeter. A large mixed-use common area comprises a waiting area with contemporary seating and grey area rug, breakout areas with upholstered privacy seating and a pantry that opens to an adjacent lunch table. These aspects give the space a welcoming, hospitable feel to help promote collaboration and a sense of community.
Technology and Nature
Poured concrete floors and open ceilings were treated with interior insulated galvanized oval ductwork with pendant light fixtures that splash light onto the slab and ductwork. Two long rows of custom standing-height benching tables in plain sliced natural walnut veneer punctuate the loft-like effect with progressive high task chairs providing employees with the option to sit or stand. Gray carpeting warms the ambience of the space and defines both the private and open work area. With soaring ceilings and expansive windows that provide vibrant city views, and large-scale, nature-inspired artwork and video monitor content, the space creates a unique bridge between the cosmopolitan city and the beauty of the natural world.
