Aspen Guest House is a renovation of an existing 539 sqm home, situated on an 80+ acre property in Aspen, CO. The client envisioned a new build on one parcel of land with a concurrent renovation of the existing structure, which would be used as a primary residence on the property until the main house was completed.
The property itself is unique, as it lies in the middle of an elk migration path. Colorado has very strict wildlife laws, which extend to construction. In turn, while elk are in the area, all structures must be entirely enclosed and no exterior work is permitted from November to April.
In response, NAINOA completed a renovation with a lighter touch architecturally to the structure of the home, while still making it incredibly comfortable for the 5+ years the client would live there. Part of the challenge was bridging the rustic feeling interiors with a contemporary feel that the client desired. NAINOA worked within the existing structure–for example, adding plaster in between the original wooden beams to create softness–and also additively, with custom art related to the project’s context in Aspen. The client already has an incredible art collection, which is showcased throughout the home. The client’s taste is eclectic, luxe, yet livable. Many of the materials used respond to that: mohairs, velvets, silk, wool, shearling–creating comfort in a way that is luxurious yet still inviting. As a rule, natural materials were employed throughout, with very minimal use of any man-made materials.
