Aspect on Benson is an 8 storey mixed-use building located on an ex-service station site in Toowong. The urban infill building consists of 73 large two bedroom apartments over a ground floor office tenancy, a large private pool recreation space & two subterranean basement carparks.
Sitting on a prominent corner site with extensive street frontage to a busy main street encouraged the building’s design towards a more lineal form that responds to the high traffic movement of Benson St. The building would then be a physical transition between the commercial form of Toowong Village into the residential scale of St Lucia. Symmetry within the floor plate worked well with the dimensions of the site allowing the buildings two wings to address the public when both entering & departing St Lucia along Benson St. This is particularly evident by a large cantilevered roof form emphasises the corner site. The building is split by a green core that allows a physical break in the long elevations but creates breakout spaces & opportunity for natural light, ventilation & social interaction for the residents.
A more commercial form & aesthetic to the building has been adopted. A bold façade application of undulating perforated screens enhance the podium form whilst creating a sense of movement along the front elevation. The use of steel members fixed to the slab edge that host the balustrading also extend past the slab edge creating a layering affect with the stepping of the balconies in plan, furthermore emphasising the lineal form.
