Asian Paints is an Indian multinational company engaged in manufacturing, selling and distributing paints, coatings and related materials. The Kasna facility of the company was designed to emerge as an iconic design and add a modern identity to the brand. The 20-acre complex is one of the biggest production facilities in the country and comprises a total built-up area of 5,00,000 sq. ft. The facility comprises large and complex plant buildings, such as paint house, resin house, industrial paint units, raw material and finished goods warehouses, and non-plant buildings, including a canteen and administration. The entire multilevel construction has been done in RCC. The design sharply deviates from the box-like stereotypical typology associated with industries and instead emerges as a striking sculptural edifice. There is a play in forms and levels, resulting in a variety of structural as well as architectural layouts; this also provides an artful character to the design. Elements such as jaalis (lattice), an overall stepped form and a combination of materials also contribute to the striking design. An external wall with patterns of lattices acts like a parasol, screening windows and ventilators on the parallel internal wall. While planning for the project, the Architects meticulously studied sun-shading to use daylight efficiently. In doing so, they were also able to regulate the placement of sensitive product-manufacturing areas. By using double-height windows, they managed to control the amount of daylight in the interiors. Abundant natural light also contributes positively towards establishing a healthy work environment for the staff.
