Sharan Bansal's stately home in Kolkata is sophisticatedly layered with art déco forms and bespoke furniture that perfectly fit their personality and lifestyle, skillfully woven together by architect Pooja Bihani.
Designed by Spaces & Design for the Bansal family and their three children, this 5,000-square-foot residence on Outram Street, aptly named Ashira, is a unique project where customized artwork and an amalgamation of materials meet design elements deeply connected to each family member.
Pooja Bihani, founder of Spaces & Design, explains that the clients wanted a well-lit, clutter-free home they could appreciate daily and adapt to their lifestyle. The result is a prestigious dwelling featuring several distinctive hallmarks: five arches forming a subtle threshold between living and dining spaces, a 20-foot-long community table bridging indoors and outdoors, a concrete curtain backdrop wall, intricate inlay work, a shamiana ceiling in the powder room, artistic shutters in the foyer, and monolith sandstone carved pillars. A signature design element, a subtle black outline, appears throughout the home in artwork inlays and border frames, creating visual continuity across spaces.
The main door, carved with marble fascia and Brazilian quartz in avocado green, welcomes visitors into a lengthy rectangular foyer. From here, the informal living area opens to the right and the dining space to the left, with natural light and curated art drawing you deeper inside. The 20-foot communal table serves as a centerpiece, extending 13 feet indoors and 7 feet onto the balcony through sliding doors. Fabricated from concrete with bespoke decoration, this unique piece embodies the home's philosophy of connection. Beyond the sliding doors, the balcony offers picturesque views of a lake and a mango tree, a vista that captured Pooja's imagination on her first visit.
The formal living room features extensive art curation, including a deco art motif, Scandinavian fur, sculptures, and a bespoke octagonal center table. A Ferro Crete curtain, concrete layered with metal, creates a dramatic backdrop for the sculptural console. The dining space stands out with elegant material exploration, blending linear and curvilinear forms. Five arches representing the five family members linearly demarcate the formal living from dining, inspired by classic houses. These proportional arches serve as a funneling space that makes both volumes appear larger while maintaining visual appeal.
An asymmetrical vaulted ceiling runs perpendicular to the arches, creating dynamic spatial flow. Adorned beautifully in grey tones of marble with long matrix lines on the floor, the dining space features a table crafted from unique marble pieces with a panda top and pencil-shaped legs. Behind the stone wall paneling lies a showstopper: the powder room with its bright orange shamiana ceiling, crescent moon phase motifs transforming into mirrors, and diffused lighting between marble layers. A traditional Nagaland raincoat hangs unexpectedly behind the door.
The informal living area serves as the family's gathering space, featuring thread art panels by Gunjan Arora converted into functional cabinet shutters. Three large sandstone columns from Rajasthan form a bespoke puja area, allowing the children to engage with daily rituals in an open, accessible manner. Family photographs and travel memories adorn the shelves, maintaining curiosity and connection. The playroom beyond features a central play table, a large wooden world map marked with travel pins and flags showing family adventures, and ample storage. A ceiling detail mirrors the table below, while a small mezzanine sleeping zone projects like a balcony above a cozy seating section.
Each bedroom reflects individual personalities. The son's industrial-chic room features black metal finishes, Lego displays, and a charming platform bed with an integrated headboard using seven to eight complementary fabrics. The daughter's room balances neutral colors with wooden and black accents, curved forms, and dramatic black-and-white marble inlay flooring in the attached bathroom. The master bedroom showcases richness through tan colors, walnut wood, and a centrally placed bed backed by a study area on a raised platform with fluted panels serving as bookshelves.
