KOLLEKTOR – Arts Centre and theatre is Sundsvall
The extension of Kultur Magasinet wills to become an interface tool between two different portions of the wide public space opening up on Selångersån quaysides. This moves our proposal toward the definition of a building that, instead of seating on the plot regardless of the context, will grow and shape itself according to its urban base. We want to pursue to the extreme the concept of the Kultur Magasinet by keeping the existing cross circulation structure. Our starting point is to pursue the cross structure, in order to amplify its power of social attractor and become icon of the new cultural centre, without compromising the clear layout of the building. We “explode” the potential of the central gallery, preserving the entrance as it is now, celebrating the opening of the cultural program to the city. The current public space in front of Kultur Magasinet suffers a very chaotic planning. For this reason, we zoom out on a landscape-geographical scale and by bifurcating the river we define a clear public island, arrival of the program explosion. The island defines a clear and dignified urban space that becomes a social and geographical happening into the city. The building extension , flying over the new water line, touches the island, becoming its unique happening, celebrating the public nature of the intervention. The perception of the new building is multiple according to the arrival side. Coming from the river by boat, walking from the new pier east, navigating under the connection trumpet, arriving from the E4 or coming from the new west development, the building offers a panoptic perception where the continuous switch of scale reminds the European baroque tradition that largely influenced Sundsvall and its tradition. Very fascinating issue of the program is the collection of different stages and theatres, ranging from drama to experimental performances, open to all kinds of public. Inside “Kollector”, this program progressively opens from the connection with Kultur Magasinet till the climax of the north façade, where all the main theatres open their backstages to the city. On the north part of the building, where the big collector reaches its maximal dilatation, the main auditoria find place. The rich support program, though creating an articulated spatial system, follows a very simple concept, by embracing the main performance spaces. This way, the circulation system within the building contributes to activate the whole complex by a continuous flow around the auditoria. Public, artists and employees melt into this hyperactive peripheral space. The perception of the programatic distribution is multiple. West and East facades, with single shots through the outer skin, present openings looking toward Kulture Magasinet, preserving a constant visual relationship between old and new. As opposite, the north façade announces clearly a cultural happening into the city, vibrating with all its program mixture at all times.. Kollector becomes a new image maker for the city, stating the ambition of Sundsvall as innovative cosmopolitan city. The eclectic nature of Sundsvall architecture, its history as trading and harbor city, the materialization of the urban environment through the various and playful use of stone, made us think about a building that could collect the essence of the city and traduce it into a clear piece of contemporary architecture. Kollector reminds the structure of a warehouse, a huge hangar capable to preserve and offer to the citizens the many “cultural containers” collected into the hart of the city. For this reason, the conformation of the “trumpet” warehouse takes origin from the Kultur Magasinet which preserves its role of arrival point, and expands till the new public island. The program distribution follows a vertical layering according to the slope of the trumpet structure. Ground floor and basement host loading areas and storages on north. Toward south, under the belly of the new building, the restaurant and catering areas open onto the new big terrace west and the new water line. Going up the levels, the main circulation space brings the flows of people from Kultur Magasinet to the new complex and vice versa, crossing exhibition space and the foyer to the main theatres. Finally the upper levels, concentrated into the north side, host two office levels. They benefit of an excellent orientation with their facade toward north, and with terraces to the south, toward Kultur Magasinet. The double layer of the roof offers a good system to climatize and illuminate with natural light the working spaces, since the policarbonate layer of the inner facade becomes skylight system on the roof structure and louver for air circulation. In order to materialize our concept, we inherited the material pattern of the city of stone and reinterpreted it in a contemporary way. The trumpet structure of the big kollector is constituted by a reticulated steal frame that, working as an arch in all its sections, unloads its weight to the outer line of poles. We take advantage of the double layer of this structure and differentiate the material of inner and outer façade. Inside, a continuous layer of polycarbonate defines the interior spaces. The steel structure in the middle package supports the outer layer, constituted by white concrete prefabricated panels. The two layers of the façade interact with the program behind. Where the outer shell meets the ground, the roof or where the inner program does not need light (i.e. loading and storage areas), the concrete façade reconstitutes the volume, resembling the brick structure of the stone town. When the inner program vibrates of human flows and needs daylight, the concrete disappears and reveals the transparent polycarbonate inside. The colorful pattern of the inner skin filters the light with a continuous vibration that will make any corner of the inner space different and exciting. Both materials, solid concrete and semi-transparent polycarbonate, resemble the pattern of the stone city. The manipulation of the “heavy” perception of the stone from concrete till the transparent single piece of stained polycarbonate, makes the traditional technology of Sundsvall contemporary and innovative.
