The building was
conceived as a singular form that establishes a discrete relationship with the
surrounding landscape, accommodating itself to the contours of the site.
Through material and scale the building makes connections with the landscape as
well as rural building tradition. Its placement, away from the centre of the
site, allows easy access for the public to the exhibition space and toilets –
close to the public access to the site – but maintains privacy for the studio
and residence at the other end of the building. The upper level of the two
storey residence is directly accessed from the road level allowing the
artist(s) to engage with the community life - and the building to engage with
the pattern of ribbon development – whilst maintaining the seclusion of the art
spaces that directly engage with the rural landscape at the lower level.
