A 3-story, artist’s workshop is sited on a corner in a gritty
waterfront area, the rapidly transforming former industrial & warehouse
zone of Red Hook, Brooklyn.
A multi-media artist requested a workspace to produce and
display his art. The new building references the garage previously occupying
the site and more importantly the neighborhood vernacular of industrial
warehouses. The client requested a building with a small living component that
felt secure in a marginal neighborhood still in flux. The building is a bold
volume with security gates and glass facing the street. Both layers can be
fully opened. The volume is carved away to introduce light and air.
A
void running the length of the building creates an exterior workspace/ garden.
Bi-fold doors of polycarbonate open upward, create an awning for this exterior
room. The core of the building houses a dark room. Above is an office mezzanine
overlooking the workspace where another void creates an outdoor space. The top
floor is a live/work studio with views to the harbor.
