This project is a laneway structure that was designed prior to the City of Vancouver’s Laneway Housing Initiative. It was conceived with two specific programmatic scenarios in mind – and immediate requirement for an 800sf working artist’s studio, storage space, and covered parking space; as well as a future agenda to be able to easily occupy the structure into a one-bedroom laneway dwelling. In order to meet the City of Vancouver zoning requirements, the so-called ancillary structure was planned as four elements: 1) a single main space with a door to the garden and a large operable glass wall, 2) a ‘garage’ space that was finished as in interior space, with a connection to the main space, 3) a powder room that fitted with a rough-in for the future installation of a shower, and 4) a carport. In the artist studio scenario the finished ‘garage’ is used as a storage space, with large swing doors opening onto the lane for moving large artwork in and out of the studio. In the laneway dwelling scenario the ‘garage’ is used as a bedroom, and an existing storage space is where the shower is added.
