Initially conceived as a visitor centre for Newark, this project proposes a symbiotic combination of art gallery and public garden footbridge. By situating the gallery over the Passaic River, the design not only celebrates the city's maritime heritage and connectivity while also highlighting the river’s economic and urban potential. This project aims to enhance the city's cultural, economic, and environmental value by blurring the boundaries between private and public, permanent and temporary, indoor and outdoor spaces. The introverted gallery spaces, illuminated by numerous skylights, are complemented by carefully positioned windows throughout the building framing a number of Newark’s landmarks: an architectural promenade inspired by Japanese principles of ‘obstruction and revelation’.
