Art Fort is a home and studio space for an accomplished local painter. Our client approached us wanting both a functional studio space and a home that was able to host friends, family, curators and fellow artists. She was looking for a home that felt cozy and comfortable, and where she would be able to age in place. As an artist, natural light was going to be a critical component for the home, as was storage space for her tools, materials and personal belongings. Programmatically our client was looking for substantial separation between the home and the art studio, adjacency between the kitchen and carport, and easy access to the studio for deliveries and studio visits. Finally, and perhaps most critically, the home had to be financially feasible for our client.
In addition to the design objectives and constraints, the steeply sloped site presented a unique opportunity and challenge. The project would require site work to level out areas for the new home. In response, we designed a two story home and studio. This allowed us to embed the bottom of the structure into the site, and provide easy entry to the home on the second floor. We worked closely with a landscaping team and engineers to make sure that runoff from the hill directly behind the home was controlled, while creating a pleasant outdoor space for our client.
We used multiple outdoor areas, which were less expensive to build, to expand the entertaining areas of the home. A deck adjacent to the entry is a fantastic outdoor dining area. It steps down to a firepit that is tucked against the slope of the adjacent hillside, further extending the home’s usable space. On the opposite side of the home, a second story deck space provides outdoor lounge space while viewing the spectacular sunsets over the surrounding forest. Below, the art studio expands to a patio, some of which is covered by the second floor deck, creating a functional outdoor painting space in the summer.
On the interior, spaces are kept modestly sized, simple, and cozy. Wrap-around windows in the main bedroom and living room bring light into both spaces and create a dynamic facade for this strategically simple home. Furniture and millwork by local cabinet makers and designers round out the space.
The studio space, located on the bottom level of the home, is accessed via an exterior stair. The mental separation created by physically leaving the “home” level and entering the “work” level was enough to achieve our client’s wish for separation while keeping the home more cost efficient. Natural light enters the studio via a large glass garage door and clerestory windows. Ample storage and a fully ventilated spray booth ensure proper functionality, while a flexible guest bedroom with a built-in desk and an efficiently sized bath round out the lower level. A home and hub for creativity, Art Fort interrogates how best to design an efficient, cohesive home that doesn’t compromise on views, functionality or design sensibility.
