ART Condos is part of the redevelopment of the Queen West Triangle, from formerly industrial land and uses into new mixed-use development. This area of Toronto has been designated the Art and Design District, characterized by the establishment of art galleries, design studios, restaurants and cafes.
With 152 units ART Condos offers a diverse residential mix including live/work lofts and self-contained townhouse suites. Ground Floor live/work units with individual exterior entrances accommodate design professionals (fashion designers, artists, landscape architects, interior designers and architects). The townhouse units are located at an upper level, addressing and sharing the elevated landscaped courtyard.
ART Condos seeks to address its cultural context by incorporating elements of urban life characteristic of the neighborhood into the design of the building, exploring creative opportunities for street animation and civic engagement. Many parts of the project perform multiple functions. A 4-storey high wall mural on the laneway declares the synergy of art and business - “art is business / business is art”.
The exterior design is inspired by the robust industrial buildings that have
characterized this area for the past 150 years. A 4-storey high three-dimensional masonry grid of columns and spandrels is rendered in precast concrete with coursing reveals and porcelain tile accents. As a counterpoint glazed bay windows and balconies project through the masonry gird marking individual units. Dark window frames evoke the industrial heritage of the area.
At ART Condos an abstract interpretation of the historical context is revealed, and then infilled and topped off.
