AN INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE MASTERPIECE The
architectural design challenge was to convert and demolish a conventional three-bedroom
three-bath condominium into a space to show and live with the owner’s
collection of significant modern art. Two bedrooms and a bath were deleted from
the program to achieve a spacious open design. A "floating box" housing a small kitchen and a
power room was strategically placed into the open plan to create circulation and flow for viewing art. The "language" is an aesthetic calm with a strong
sense of order, it lacks visual distraction and the precisely constructed
details keep it in sharp focus. This language excluded the use of all standard
products, the non-standard become a theme throughout, requiring the need for numerous
innovative architectural details getting all the way down to minimalism of the architected
toilet paper holders. Meticulous detailing is critical to the success of the
space. The minimalist manner is both soothing and invigorating. It is an
extremely appropriate backdrop for the owner’s Art Collection and furnishings.
The
key architectural materials of smooth diamond plaster painted walls, shop
finished polished painted panels, solid color Corian, epoxy resin paint floor
and stretched fabric Euro Span ceilings all work together to reinforce the
cohesive and monochromatic quality of the space. Highlights of brushed
stainless steel are found throughout in the architect’s custom designed doors
and hardware and other built-in components.
