The
objective of this intervention was to create a network of public spaces using
the existing circulation paths as the generative force. Rather than blocking off these pathways
with the structure, the architecture allows them to pass through it and then
begins to expand them. This
overlap of circulations begins to create public spaces of varying sizes that
become accessible from all parts of the site.
Program: The program consists of layered, public
spaces formed by the existing circulation paths of the site. The first level is a large open space,
that can be used for public gatherings, performances or markets. The second level is a small bar. The third level is a viewing area,
where people can go to relax, sketch, or just take in the river scenery
Site: The site
presents a great opportunity to create a major public focal point for the city
of Florence along the Arno river.
Since the great flood of 1966 the city has been cautious when it comes
to building near the river. Now
that the flooding is under control, this building attempts to reconnect the
city with the river through expanding the few existing pedestrian paths on the
site into a layered system of public spaces, making the riverside area an
important part of the city again.
