This project combines two critical human services programs in one building; The Avondale Senior Center, The Arizona Complete Health Avondale Resource Center, and the main office for the Human Services department. The facility is a home for all community members, fully supportive, engaging and comforting. The site allows for a single story solution in an appropriate and supportive setting that takes advantage of distant views of the Estrella Mountains. The building layout is designed using a series of programmatic zones. ‘Services’ are located on one side apart from the primary ‘community’ program spaces, which allows for services to be provided with privacy and dignity while still exposing patrons to the excitement of the community center. The entry lobby feels like a large community living room and provides both a functional lobby as well as programmed space for card tables, reading, book shelves, toys and a children’s play area. A variety of community rooms can serve multiple departments and community partner’s throughout the day. The office spaces can be closed off to allow for the main lobby, multi-purpose rooms and dining hall to be rented out by community members or organizations after hours. The new Resource Center is a hub for human services where community members are welcomed to a safe haven that provides a sense of belonging and empowers community members to improve their quality of life. It is a beacon of hope that anchors a sense of community in the southwest valley.
