When the northern wind sweeps across the Songhua River and drifting mist freezes into rime, dressing the trees along the banks in crystalline white, the Songhua Lake Ski Resort—nestled within the Changbai Mountains—unfolds a vast snowy expanse, inviting skiers into a world of speed, exhilaration, and romance that heralds the new ski season.
The resort features 50 premium ski trails spanning 55 kilometers, supported by six imported high-speed chairlifts and eight magic carpet lifts. From gentle beginner slopes to adrenaline-pumping super runs for professionals, this season marks a significant leap forward in infrastructure across all levels. Newly developed terrain zones—the “Mushroom Matrix” and “Wave Sequence”—can accommodate tens of thousands of skiers simultaneously. Every slope, in every detail, reflects a relentless pursuit of excellence in snow sports.
Arc’teryx debuted its first snowfield-based ReBIRD™ pop-up experience center at Songhua Lake in 2024. In its next chapter, STILL YOUNG was invited to reimagine and elevate the space into an alpine touring experience center. Through a restrained design language, natural textures, and sustainable practices, the team created a multifunctional hub integrating alpine training, gear services, and a café. Here, the vivid interplay of coolness and warmth unfolds an immersive narrative of alpine touring.
Brand Origin
A Natural Totem Rooted in the Snowbound Landscape
Born in Canada’s Coast Mountains, Arc’teryx is a professional outdoor brand deeply rooted in alpine environments. Its minimalist design language seeks ever more refined solutions for outdoor exploration, supporting adventurers as they push toward new limits.
The project takes “Invisible Heights, Sustainable Evolution” as its conceptual thread, translating the brand’s philosophy into a tangible spatial experience.
Sitting at the edge of a vast ski field, the experience center’s primary mission is to provide shelter. Its façade is conceived as a “portable mountain skin”—a tent-like envelope inspired by alpine ridgelines and crevasses, creating a striking visual contrast against the surrounding white expanse.
Drawing inspiration from the natural textures of Banff National Park, the design translates the silhouettes of mountain ridges, the layered density of coniferous forests, and the tonal shifts of glacial moraines into earth-toned textile prints and embossed patterns. The tent-like exterior unfolds like a frequently folded topographic map—where wind directions, slope gradients, and altitude contours seem encoded within its rhythmic lines. At night, warm light diffuses through the textile shell, evoking a temporary alpine camp glowing in the snow—a quiet retreat to pause and restore warmth before setting out again.
Dual Narratives
An Immersive Experience of Alpine Touring and Recharging
Professional ski gear anchors the spatial layout, shaping two parallel narrative paths where function and experience seamlessly intertwine.
The “Alpine Touring” narrative begins at the display area, tracing a complete journey from preparation to departure. Gear is displayed following the rhythm of “selecting, using, maintaining, and setting out again,” helping skiers intuitively understand how each piece performs in real scenarios. At the heart of the narrative is the ReBIRD™ experience zone, offering member services such as gear rental, seasonal care, and limited-time heat-press customization. Here, gear is renewed through repair and heat-press craft, and ReBIRD™ restored ski garments enter the rental cycle—embodying the idea of “setting out again.”
The “Recharging” narrative centers on the “Pine Flame Core,” a café space offering coffee and a moment of recharge, where skiers can pause and regain energy. With open views toward the snowfield, the seating area near the bar counter draws the gaze to the mountains and ski slopes, inviting moments of quiet observation and conversation.
Central Installation
A Spatial Metaphor of Growing Energy
Inside, sculpted timber evokes the textures of the wild mountain landscape, where the sharp chill of the snowfield meets the warmth of a mountain camp. Inspired by alpine cabins, the material palette balances raw wood, transparent glass, soft textiles, and resilient metal—ensuring durability in an outdoor environment while conveying a sense of natural intimacy.
At the heart of the café area, the central installation “Pine Flame Core” draws inspiration from a pinecone, capturing the latent energy of coniferous forests enduring wind and snow. Thin, scale-like layers, tightening gently at the outer edge and opening toward the inner core, form the sculptural centerpiece of the space. Light slowly radiates from within, evoking the soft glow of a camp before reaching the alpine summit.
Generous wood surfaces shape the bar counter and display platforms. Semi-enclosed stump seating and compact wooden tables—each topped with custom metal-pressed motifs, recall the rustic charm of outdoor camping. Fireplace lighting embedded within the wall evokes the warmth of a campfire, creating a sense of natural shelter indoors. Softly upholstered curved sofas ease post-ski fatigue and offer a relaxed social setting where skiers gather, share stories, and foster a shared cultural identity rooted in outdoor exploration.
Sustainability
The Philosophy of Symbiosis Between Humanity and Nature
Building upon Arc’teryx’s ReBIRD™ sustainability program, the project creates a one-stop service hub integrating education, experience, gear care, and relaxation.
The RSC (ReBIRD™ Service Center) is envisioned not merely as a space for gear repair and reuse, but also a platform where the brand’s ethos continues to evolve.
Ski gear blends harmoniously into natural settings, woven into the stories of athletes and outdoor adventures, bringing the brand’s ethos to life.
Here, gear is cared for and skiers find renewal—coffee, conversation, projections, and snowfall hush settling into the quiet mountain night.
Spatial Evolution
A Rejuvenating Sanctuary for Skiers
This reimagined space is not merely a simple upgrade. Through natural textures, sustainable practices, and a warm atmosphere, the space becomes a spiritual camp—encouraging introspection and a renewed journey.
It is neither just a stage for showcasing gear nor a fleeting pop-up. Rather, it serves as a bridge connecting people with the alpine environment and nature, and a vibrant hub for outdoor culture.
It reminds every skier preparing to set out:
the mountains are never conquered—
we are simply fortunate to pass through.
Here, the spirit is rekindled, gear is tended, and warmth settles in—then the journey continues, onward to the next evolution.
