This professional service firm's new office space required integrating staff across four stories in a high rise building to promote culture and collaboration. A new slab opening was cut and limited in size to precisely fit the new stair as a matter of economy to mitigate the cost of reinforcing the slab, as well as to maximize the usable floor area. The architectural stair was designed with a single run connecting each story without an intermediate landing. That configuration, combined with a multi-story feature wall of perforated millwork panels, allowed the surrounding floor area to serve as a landing space that offers a moment of rest and spontaneous interaction as a matter of staff well-being. The architecture of the stair was designed as a thin folding plate with one central stringer to take advantage of steel’s strength and conserve material resources.
Nicholas Jay Architect was the architect-of-record for the stair in a collaborative project with Toronto-based interior design firm, iN Studio Design.
