WY-TO is the Art Director for the Common Spaces Exhibition
in collaboration with Chia Ming Chien, Chua Yeong Ching, Peter Hunt, Anita
Nevens and Irene Pautrisia Tandiono. The 2011
chapter of Archifest, Singapore’s annual architectural event, presents the Common Spaces exhibition, an
investigation into the nature of shared spaces and the way these experiences
have been modified by an increasingly global environment. To facilitate this
exploration, the exhibition is zoned into four facets centred on the theme of
shared spaces – the architecturally defined “physical environment”, the
psychological dimension of “perceived spaces”, and the highly connected, yet
intangible, worlds of the “media” and “virtual networks”. Inspired by the
‘Agora’, a gathering place in ancient Greek cities that was a site for
discussion, debate and the exchange of ideas, Common Spaces has been similarly envisaged to be a destination
where questions are raised, discussions are sparked and communal interactivity
is stimulated.
In addition to the
curatorial contents of each zone, relevant projects from competitions and
contributions are featured alongside the exhibits, thus illustrating the way
Architects and Designers shape their works by exploring, interpreting and
manipulating these facets.
Furthermore, a fifth zone, the “playground”, has been included amidst
the scaffolding to provide an open space within which each participant can define,
interpret and utilise the common space in a personalised manner. As such, the
exhibition design has been conceived to invite the public to experience and
experiment with the ideas broached in each zone. Common Spaces achieves public awareness not only with information,
but also through the experiential demonstration of architecture’s ability to
communicate through the use of spatiality and function. Archifest
