Integration of the merger
Environmental concerns of the client and the obvious need to respect the quality of the site led the winning team to go beyond the simple integration into the natural environment. We can speak here of true fusion: the burying of the building in the field upstream keeps intact the existing site profile. Nothing will frustrate not highlight the plasticity of the envelope snow. Eventually, the landscape will be returned to the same at the foot of the legendary Face Bellevarde.
The building is nevertheless an open and transparent: side road to La Balme, its unique facade, facing east, is largely open to the panorama from which emerge the mountains near the Duomo and Tsanteleina . This façade is fully glazed, with the exception of its two ends, processed dry stone to serve as monitors fire regulations. A necessary precaution given the proximity of the two adjacent lift that passes above the building (Cable 3S Olympic chairlift Santel). Finally, it is protected from the weather and avalanche risk by a large overhang (3-5 m).
With its huge glass area all transparency, inside and outside are one. The set is linear, without any break and the feeling of merger and built environment is enhanced. Visually, the walk-in areas inland water increases the depth of field.
Spaces of well-being soothing and serene
Designed on a horizontal line to be seen as a protective shelter, the whole system is designed to mitigate the impact to the environment while ensuring its attractiveness. Thus, for its architectural expression simple, durable and timeless avoiding any fad, the Sports Centre Val d'Isère says the desire to offer equipment which each activity can be fully exercised, and instill the desire to discover other practices ... in the heart of one of the most famous ski areas in the world.
A thorough treatment was given to the acoustics of the place by a judicious distribution of local and use of appropriate materials (wood siding, suspended ceilings stretched textile ...). Emblematic of the universe Avalin vernacular, stone, wood are associated with glass, stainless steel and water, to offer all year round a serene, warm and reassuring. The home of disabled people has been the subject of attention: all premises and facilities are accessible to disabled (2 lifts, launching PMR for all basins, access ramp in the PMR aquatic and recreational spaces).
A functional and fun
Open, readable and educational, the internal organization of the building allows the user to move easily and to move "on sight" without systematic use of signs, which is much more pleasant for customers mostly foreign.
Home General and aquatic areas are on the ground floor. Like the spa, nestled inside the hall aquatic forms soft, beach wood saunas and originality of the boxes out of which protrude into the volume of river, give the place to relax, protected behind the glass partition, an intimate and unique perfume.
Located just behind the façade, the hall has two water tanks representing over 700 m2 of water. All functions of well being grouped together: swimming against the current, bubble seats, massage jets, water cannons and a play area for children.
The sport of swimming has its natural place in a separate pool of 25 meters.
Around, open spaces provide recreational activities or walking.
Installed at the top level, the weight rooms, fitness and squash all the overhang. The climbing area is located on a lower level to take advantage of the triple height of the building is across from the entrance into the arena by a glass walkway that features the climbers from the inside and outside .
Set of visual transparency, facade, gateway entrance and glass partitions, air corridors, the building opens its spaces to natural light. Beyond the aesthetic bias, it is also promoting greater energy efficiency and better control of operating costs. In a similar vein, setting artificial light, where it will be necessary, will use materials with low energy consumption.
A project requiring
The design-build process, selected by the Municipality of Val d'Isère for the constraints of planning and budget, required the association of partners with proven skills. Design time production, delivery in two to two specific uses, environmental constraints (1850 m altitude, long winter, heavy snow, avalanche and earthquake resistance, cable car and chairlift overlooking the building), required a response integrating qualitative and operational speed, efficiency and safety. The team GFC Construction / Atlas Architects & Architecture Coste won the project in light of these requirements and applying them from the known result. Validation time shortened with the organization of a seminar project involving all stakeholders, site programming planned well in advance for reliable sequence of steps necessary human and technical resources accordingly selected for their versatility (precast , associated with tower crane mobile crane ...) Everything is sized to provide at Val d'Isere equipment fully integrated into the environment and the dynamics of the community.
While the schedule is tight, but thanks to the perfect engagement of all stakeholders, it will be absolutely respected. The building closed-canopy, out of the water / air out, was delivered in late October 2008 to accommodate the press center of the World Championships in Alpine in 2009. At the end of this global event, a second phase of work began April 30, 2009 for the development of Aquasport center and setting up equipment.
Aquasport Center was delivered to the Municipality of Val d'Isere Dec. 11, 2009.
