Appleton CE Primary School is situated in the centre
of the village of Appleton, just north of the A420 and
north-west Abingdon. Dating back to 1837 the school
was rebuilt in 1961 in an architectural style popular at
the time. The building is predominantly red brick with
pitched concrete tile roof, with fl at felt and metal roof in
some areas.
The proposal was to create a dedicated Foundation
stage classroom by extending one wing of the front
of the school. Appleton School is a warm caring and
stimulating environment with high teaching standards.
The design and quality of the new extension aim was
to refl ect the quality of education offered. The extension
aim was to improve the overall appearance of the
school. While the new classroom is more contemporary
then the style of the existing buildings, it still refl ects the
massing, materiality and scale of the school. The foundation
stage unit is a single storey extension with a low
pitch metal roof, which extends to create a generous
external play and learning area. The extension is clad
in timber boarding to refl ect the existing gable ends.
The result is an enhancement to the external appearance
of the school
