Several target groupsKAW designed on behalf of Wooninc. 110 houses at the Smuldersweg in
Eindhoven. The apartments are primarily intended for seniors. The complex,
named Jean Sibelius, is designed in a way residents can stay when extra care is
needed but the apartments can also be rented to other target groups.
Formerly 2 postwar flats were situated at this location. The flats do not longer satisfay
the current demands. Also the design of public space did not contribute to a
pleasant environment. Yet the location became very attractive thanks to the
parks and a shopping mall nearby.
The Smuldersweg contains a varity
of different types of environments
The new building connect these environmentsand issimultaneously a clear,
individualqualityin the district. Central in the complex is the common garden. There is a
direct connection with the half-sunken garage. The fence was designed by students
of the Design Academy Eindhoven. Because many balconies are oriented on the
court, the garden is a vibrant center of the complex. The concrete elements, the overhangs and deep windows
create an exciting shadow. The building is constantly changing, depending on light. All apartements do have French balconies facing the street
and the galary. The kitchen is placed central in the apartment so residents can
choose which side of the house they want to put their living space.Nominated for BNA Building of the year and Ugo Rivolta
