The originally 3-bedroom 420 sq. ft. apartment was converted into a 2-bedroom configuration to suit the new owner’s needs. The existing walls separating the bedrooms and the corridor were replaced with built-in shelves and cabinets as space-defining devices. Facing the main corridor, the new built-in bookshelf separates the master-bedroom from the living room area and became the main focal point once a person enters the apartment. The bookshelf allows the corridor to become a semi-reading space rather than being a purely circulation element. The living habits of the family favour a more open plan and do not require bedroom doors to be closed much. Thus, sliding doors are used for the two bedrooms and the master bathrooms to allow for a free flow of circulation. When in open position, the sliding doors form a L-shape element concealing the built-in cabinets serving both bedrooms. When the sliding doors are in close position, the L-shape element dissolves and reveals the cabinets.
