Apartment in Kifissia
The apartment is located in a 1980s building in Kifisia, typologically representative of the continuation of the modernist movement. One of its main characteristics is the open plan layout combined with large windows that offer unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape, along with various wooden elements from the era, such as the existing flooring and doors. The primary objective of the design intervention was to modernize the apartment while preserving its original character and its connection to modernist principles.
Emphasizing natural light and the apartment’s relationship with the landscape were key design priorities. Color functions as a central compositional element, creating distinct zones and a constant interplay between warm and cool tones. The selected color palette and materials subtly reference both the natural surroundings and modernist architecture. A dialogue is established between existing and new materials, with clear nods to the original condition. The existing wooden floors and window frames were preserved, while new oak flooring complements the old and unifies the private areas.
In the main living space, a custom wooden construction draws inspiration from the natural landscape’s colors and complements the tone of the existing flooring. In the kitchen, a continuous interplay between wood and warm/cool tones is explored. In contrast, the main bathroom adopts a more neutral material approach, allowing the landscape view to take center stage. Here too, the dialogue between existing and new elements is articulated through natural materials—such as Naxos gray marble—and through modernist references, like cement-textured tiles. In the bedroom areas, a softer material and color palette was selected, again emphasizing the connection to the natural setting.
Finally, the same design principles were applied to the neighboring apartment’s bathroom renovation, where natural materials such as Thasos marble and European oak take on a leading role.
