There was a 20 years old apartment in Zupančičeva Jama, Ljubljana, unsuited for a young creative couple, which desperately need repurposing. In its original state, although well preserved, it was not appropriate for both living and working from home. That was until a team of young architects, came and did a complete renovation.
The quarters of Zupančičeva Jama in Ljubljana, where the above mentioned apartment is located are formed mostly by residential tissue, intertwined by a couple of accompanying restaurants, stores, as well as service and business programs. The area has shaped itself into one of the more noticeable residential areas in Ljubljana through the means of addition, providing programs that serve jobs to many of its residents. By means of observing modern socio-economical trends and using advanced information technology, we can observe the fact that the border between work and private life is becoming ever more blurred. One of the prime examples of this is the fact that young people tend to work from home in increasing numbers.
This became common practice of young people living in Slovenia and here we have a prime example of how we can accomplish a total apartment design and functional renovation using very limited means. The entire investment ranged in at under 30.000€.
In its original state, in spite of its decent preservation, the apartment was not suited to the need of the young couple. The floor plan layout and spatial template were completely contradictory with the idea of both living and working at home so the initial planning focus was put into the spatial activity layout. The initially separate kitchen, dining and living room areas have been fused into a larger, open type space that encompasses all of the daily activities of the young couple. The joinery follows the idea of a well lit apartment as well as making optimum use of the existing building installations. All the closets are set into the entrance area, maximizing the living space fluidity, which is also connected to the work cabinet, where the residents spend most of their day. Aside from excellent lighting, work conditions are further improved by appropriate furniture selection and work areas placement. The sleeping area is set to the far south side of the apartment, being separated from the living and work spaces, offering an added layer of privacy. Special thought was put into the bathroom renovation. Aside from the functional use aspects, care was taken with the selection of materials used, based on both longevity and residents personal preference.
The offers an apartment adaptation example, not only by using modern materials and technology but also by promoting a modern lifestyle, where the home is not only a place of residence but also a place of work.
