Frames Apartment was designed for a young intellectual couple, looking
to bring more light into the fragmented space of the typical – in terms of
layout – 60’s apartment, located in Pagrati, Athens. The design team introduced the idea of ‘frames’ to establish the argument that the
small apartment rooms should shape a new connected main space offering
the maximum views to the Pagrati grove through three openings towards
the west. The ‘framing’ is reinforced by the bookcase that spans across the
length of the wall towards the Grove, hosting part of the couple’s extensive
book collection.
The structure of the building articulates the interior in a twofold way: on
the one hand, a set of two columns and the hidden lighting that connects
them define the buffer zone that divides the main space from the bedroom
and the en-suite bathroom; on the other hand, the concrete column acts as
the imaginary line that divides the entrance space, the kitchen, the dining
space and the living room.
