In response to the extreme pressures and compressed space of a below
grade New York apartment with a generous garden, we extended the existing
space, responding to the functional constraints by creating a new space that
is both closed and open, both of the interior and of the garden, blurring the
line between the two, to create a single place for living and gathering.
The elements of living are incorporated into a single formal gesture
wrapping around the space to provide enclosure, storage, space for work and
space for living. Functional elements, floor, wall, roof, light, seating,
workspace and storage all merge into this gesture deflecting and enriching it
while defining and sheltering a fluid space for inhabitation. The result is a
smooth whole that fuses the apartment and garden into a multi-programmatic
living space.
