The project is a renovation of an apartment from the late 60s located in the central region of São Bernardo do Campo. The original plan, which had a living room, kitchen, laundry room, bathroom and service room and two bedrooms, was converted into a space with a reduced program, removing a bedroom to expand the living room, and converting the service room into an office. The new plant configuration results in an initial desire for the project, full circulation throughout the space. It is worth mentioning that a project in this context is not born ready-made, it is a collective construction between architects, clients and labor, although the north is known, what is interesting is the path to get there. And this involves understanding what can or cannot be demolished, the new flows that will exist as a result of these movements, the spaces that will be maintained. Such investigation begins at the beginning of the project and as the work progresses this research starts to be applied to the details and they, in turn, start to be designed in order to support the needs of the practical lives of the residents. Finally, spaces defined and adjustments made, the main issue becomes materiality.
The parquet flooring, typical of the time, was maintained and restored and the floors in the wet area were replaced with hydraulic tiles. For the sinks and table, a unique choice: granite. The living room, a social space, only has a large sideboard, and the arrangement of the furniture varies according to the living space. What separates this space from the wet area of the residence is a metal door with sandblasted glass, varying the circulation possibilities. In these service spaces, the joinery is white and simplified, just as the entire project seeks to be. The lighting is all indirect and made with metal pieces, some of which were created by the office. Some of the furniture is a historical revival of the city, famous for its furniture industry. The furniture in the living room are restorations of family pieces, not just in the property, but in design.
The charm of the project is the city context, one of the biggest advantages of buildings with these characteristics are the large windows that, on the social side, insert the apartment into the street and on the service side, by having taller windows, place you in the sky. These characteristics provide us with the fact that the apartment is well lit and ventilated, in addition to creating the sensation of being in a tall house adapted to contemporary times and with due respect for its past.
