Nestled in a vibrant neighborhood in Mayfield Heights, OH, and surrounded by local shops and a scenic wetland preserve, the newly constructed, two-story residence features two major property types on its combined campus. The main building houses independent and assisted living while providing memory care services, surrounded by neighboring luxury cottages.
The design of the main building is based on a townhouse aesthetic, utilizing traditional masonry and concrete details reminiscent of the neighboring historic main street of Cleveland Heights. Defining the scale of the long and narrow building while creating a sense of place was a challenge. HED’s design team emphasized the entries on the exterior to break apart the linear appearance and create a sense of destination. Inside, the flow of the campus is broken up with courtyards in each neighborhood within the living community. These courtyards serve a dual purpose, acting as activity hubs that are only steps away from the resident’s doorstep, while also defining the small neighborhoods and giving them a sense of place and ownership. This empowers residents are to wander and exercise, while remaining within reach and sight of their destinations as well as staff members.
