The project extends into an underused side return of a splayed mid-terrace house in Peckham. The rear of the terrace was occupied by a cramped and cluttered kitchen/dining room with little nature light and that did not address the garden. As an avid cook, food blogger and supper club host, the Client wanted a spacious kitchen and entertainment space, connected to the garden in which to enjoy and share their passion for food.
As a response to the splayed plan and limited ceiling height the design opens the rear of the house creating a single, bright and legible volume dressed with a limited palette of materials. The materials were selected and arranged for maximum effect as a series of textured planes through which to read the space. A continuous crown cut oak panelled storage wall connects the length of the space allowing it to remain uncluttered and legible. The subtly textured stone worktop and concrete tiles then interlock in different planes with the oak panelling.
The design integrates the new space into the fabric of the existing terrace by creating a connection through to the front room and beyond to the garden by enlarged openings with elegant metal framed glazing. The London Stock bricks removed in the demolition of the flank wall were recycled and used in the new side extension to reduce the material consumption of the project and integrate with the existing building fabric.
