Ankara Beytepe Equestrian Sports Complex is a concept-scale cultural and sport project in Ankara, located in a low-density green area near major university campuses. It proposes a multi-functional public attractor that expands an equestrian infrastructure into a broader civic platform where architecture, topography, and flexible programming operate as one system. Rather than treating landscape as a backdrop, the design positions the site’s natural slope as an active organizer of space, movement, and public life.
The project’s most distinctive identity is its exclusive use of timber across structural systems, joints, and spatial enclosures. This is not merely an aesthetic choice, but a comprehensive environmental and experiential strategy. Timber’s renewable and low-impact qualities support sustainability goals, while its inherent thermal and acoustic performance contributes to comfort across indoor and outdoor programs. A wide-span CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) system enables uninterrupted volumes required for major equestrian events and exhibitions. At the same time, it allows the main arena to operate as a versatile stage capable of hosting large-scale performances and show-based scenarios in addition to sport-specific uses.
Topography forms the second core driver. Instead of flattening the terrain, the proposal translates the slope into tiered landscape terraces each programmed with distinct uses such as playgrounds, seating decks, cafés, sports courts, and event zones. Soft circulation paths connect these levels, ensuring seamless movement and inclusive accessibility across the site. This terraced organization transforms the complex from a single-purpose facility into a layered public park experience, offering framed views toward the central arena and the surrounding natural environment.
Programmatic diversity is intentionally broad. Equestrian activities are supported through dedicated tracks and arenas for training, events, and national competitions. Beyond this core, adaptable indoor and outdoor venues accommodate concerts, shows, fairs, and international festivals. Seminar and meeting halls can host formal gatherings or be reconfigured for more intimate events. Exhibition grounds enable showcases spanning agriculture, industry, and automotive technologies. Children’s areas and everyday recreation spaces reinforce daily use, ensuring the project functions as a community resource rather than an occasional event venue.
Public engagement is strengthened through walkability, multiple access routes, and retained visual connectivity to the landscape. The complex is conceived as a civic infrastructure rooted in nature an active, inclusive destination that can adapt to national and international event calendars while maintaining everyday relevance for local users. As a timber-structured, multi-program platform shaped by topography, Ankara Beytepe Equestrian Sports Complex embodies a forward-thinking approach to regional development where sustainability, flexibility, and public life are designed into the project’s core.
