The beach house has iconic status in Australian life. Divorced from the hassles of day-to-day routine, it’s a place that infuses rest and relaxation. With an intuitive connection to its surrounding coastal landscape, Intermode’s beach house in Angelsea offers a haven from the bustle of weekly life.
Situated on Minifie Avenue, a gently inclined dirt road that is lined with Melaleuca and tea-trees, the brief was to create a low maintenance house that would accommodate a young family. As great entertainers, the clients, who have two young children, wanted a weekend house that could easily and flexibly lodge visiting friends and relatives. They requested multiple outdoor spaces where people could not only gather, but also escape to and repose in the afternoon sunlight.
Situated on a sloping site, the house is raised up on concrete stumps to create an even platform that essentially floats above the ground. Floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors open up to the deck ensuring a fluid relationship between the outdoor and indoor spaces. The operable sliding glass panels permit maximum sunlight, cross ventilation and views.
Running along the western boundary is a glazed facade which allows the house to capture the afternoon sunlight. The extended plan allows all the internal spaces to be opened up to the garden. A separate sundeck provides further opportunities for barbecues and outdoor dining.
Referencing its coastal landscape, the surrounding shell adopts a palette of light timber cladding. To create harmony in the overall juxtaposition and blur the lines between inside and outside, the interior also uses a softer material palette of Victorian Ash floorboards, natural stone benchtops and two pack joinery finishes. The light, crisp nature of the bathroom tiles and the stainless steel fixtures provide a unique contrast to the more textured materials such as the warmer grained timbers.
The floorplan consists of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a study, children’s living area, and an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area. A spinal wall, central to all Intermode’s designs, hides a European laundry and deep storage units, ensuring there is not a bucket or spade in sight.
Positioned close to where the Anglesea River meets the sea, this house offers a contemporary alternative to the surrounding weatherboards and fibro shacks. Yet by incorporating a generous deck – central to all beach house designs – the house adds to the fabric of Anglesea’s relaxed, coastal atmosphere.
Built in just 12 weeks, it is a brilliant example of Intermode’s sustainable and timeless designs. Low maintenance with references to its natural environment, the house is set up so you can go down on a Friday night and immediately turn on the fire and enjoy the weekend.
