Four new build townhouses and six new build apartments on a disused car park in Anerley, South London.
Terraced streets are prevalent in London. Reviewing the surrounding urban grain and density, we have proposed to reinforce the streetscape and celebrate the gable with two new terraces. Each dwelling is rotated to provide more privacy to overlooking windows and to express a clearer and more dynamic form which distinguishes itself from the 1950/60’s terraced and semi-detached houses that characterise the area.
Flanking the east of the site is the locally listed Victorian Anerley Town Hall while to the north is Anerley Road with a variety period terraces. The proposals take reference from the predominant housing patterns while also referencing the materials, tones and textures of the adjacent town hall.
Being a vacant site it lends itself to elements of pre-fabrication. We are proposing Cross Laminated Timber for both the houses and the flats with the many delivery and environmental benefits CLT brings.
We have explored and put forward a number of both passive and active measures to reduce the environmental impact of the development. Passive measures include the selection of sustainably sourced timber both as the structure and as a cladding material and highly insulated walls and roofs. Rainwater collection allows for the direct use of rainwater for irrigation. The more active measures for renewable electricity generation are south-east and south-west photovoltaic panels feeding into the grid offsetting the power demand of the houses. The provision for air source heat pumps is proposed as a renewable source.
Each townhouse is orientated uniquely on a split level with generous floor to ceiling heights towards the back of the ground floor opening up on to the gardens.
