Andrew Hill High School needed to replace aging art classrooms and add additional chemistry space. Although originally envisioned as two separate projects on campus, we designed a single multi-disciplinary science and art building as a single, efficient classroom building.
Instead of each classroom exiting to the exterior, we created an interior gallery collaboration space where both faculty and students of art and science can mingle. The space is flooded with natural light from clerestory windows above. Breakout alcoves and a small amphitheater seating space are provided for students to gather and for faculty to create informal learning opportunities. A display zone provides areas for presentations.
This interactive design takes the same space of a traditional building and transforms it into a highly collaborative and interactive space where very different disciplines can come together and enhance the educational experience.
