This resort project demanded for a landmark signature restaurant with specific design requirements meeting Architectural Design Intent. The challenge was to design two non-identical frustum of domes - Tilted, Ellipsoidal - idealizing the shape of a coconut shell.
Parametric modeling was adopted to generate the shape as well as the framing structure. The Apex of the structure were to be located at a point matching with the tilt of the structure. The framing system had to be radially originating from this apex. And, it must follow the profile of the ellipsoidal shape too. The outer surface of the framing required circumferential strips too. Roofing element is proposed with tensile fabric (PVC-PVDF)
The ideal solution was the generate a three-dimensional steel framing system using MS plates. The structure is analyzed and designed considering the critical loads and combinations - using membrane analysis and design.
The steel structure is fabricated as a CKD (Complete Knock Down) model at the factory. The installation of the steel structure is by the mere assembly of the fabricated parts. External circumferential rib attachments are planned and attached to secondary framing once the fabric is fixed and tensioned.
Development of the workable concept, detailed engineering, steel fabrication details, fabric patterning, and sequence planning was carried out by Techno Specialist Consulting Engineers. The fabrication and installation of this structure was performed by M/s Vihanga Shade Structures.
