This single-family house is located on the Gulf of Mexico on a barrier island near Sarasota, Florida. The site is located seaward of the State of Florida Coastal Construction Control Line and requires special permitting and adherence to specific design criteria established to protect the natural beach systems. In addition to these restricting features, the local zoning code has established a "daylight plane" requirement necessitating a vertical sloping setback line. These jurisdictional requirements were a strong determinant in shaping the location and parameters of the design. The design creates a solid "wall" on the busy road fronting the site while opening with large glazed walls to the Gulf under a large covered concrete frame. The program calls for a modest home of approximately 4,000 square feet. The pool is located on the Southside of the structure for full sun and designed into the "base" of the house. Part of the pool is located under the elevated Gulf terrace above.
