This apartment, once a home shared by the owner and her parents, underwent a complete transformation after they moved out. FG Studio was invited to redesign and renovate the space, leading the design process to create a new home that would better reflect the owner’s unique style and lifestyle.
Nestled in the heart of Shanghai’s prestigious Ju-Fu-Chang district, the apartment is part of one of the first high-rise residential complexes built in the late 1990s. From the master bedroom’s window, the majestic Moller Villa can be seen, with Aphrodite Garden just a stone’s throw away.
“A Minimalist French-Inspired Home with Just One Bedroom and One Living Room”
Originally a traditional three-bedroom, two-living-room layout, the apartment had been home to the owner and her parents for nearly two decades. To suit her new solo living needs, the entire layout was reimagined by the designer.
Walking through the entryway, the partition between the dining area, living room, and balcony was completely removed, creating an open flow and amplifying the sense of space. A central island-style sofa arrangement forms a gallery-like layout, which is more conducive to socializing, fitting the lifestyle of a younger individual.
Her love for romantic French charm is woven throughout the design, becoming the foundation of the home.
Since the owner doesn’t cook at home, the designer eliminated most of the kitchen equipment, keeping only a modest prep counter that serves her minimal cooking needs.
“Let Friends Snap a Photo in Both Bathrooms”
The owner requested that the two bathrooms become unique within the home. With the designers’ careful attention to detail, the contrast of colors and the textures exceed the typical functional definition of a bathroom.
In the master bathroom, the designers softened the space’s previously awkward corners with gentle curves. Light green mosaic tiles, custom-designed to follow the curves, sweep across the walls, creating a soft and fresh atmosphere. Meanwhile, a creamy rose marble vanity subtly contrasts with the walls, adding an elegant touch.
The guest bathroom, now situated in a corner of the study, is nestled among walnut bookshelves. Entering through a concealed walnut door, one is greeted by a stunning GUCCI floral wallpaper paired with a rich burgundy sink; a black shell-framed mirror with brass inlays complements the dark walnut floor, creating a rich, sophisticated ambiance. A mix of materials evokes a serene, exotic atmosphere.
"Designing a gallery-like space centered around the collection, solely for self-indulgence."
From a limited-edition Balenciaga spacesuit that captures the eye at first glance, to a small painting that tugs at the softest part of the heart… With the designer’s curated touch, the owner’s eclectic collection is elegantly displayed throughout the home, each piece thoughtfully placed.
The original two spare bedrooms and bathroom were unified into a spacious, open-concept walk-in closet and study, designed with a showroom-like presentation.
Subtle French-inspired lines run across the ceiling and floor, with expansive beige walls providing a generous canvas for the collection, allowing for easy adjustment and updates. In contrast to traditional focused lighting, custom brass light slots, seamlessly integrated with the French lines, create a more atmospheric and immersive glow, highlighting the artworks.
