The existing building on Av. Alcorta is a characteristic structure of reinforced concrete slabs without beams and columns with capitals of 90 x 25 m and 5 floors. The intervention seeks to value the richness of this structure through its volumetric and chromatic articulation with the new elements. These operations allow an accurate reading of the relationship between the new and the existing; the characteristic geometry of the structure is highlighted, and its rhythm and variations are accompanied.
At this stage a new access to the campus was also incorporated through this building. The intervention takes advantage of the old entrance of trucks to place there an elevated esplanade that functionally unifies the ground floor, locating there the new entrance hall. This hall, glazed and open, becomes the reference space accessible both from the avenue through a large staircase and from the interior garden. The new entrance hall also structures the internal circulation system of the building. It lodges a sculptural staircase that crosses its double height generating a fluid connection between the floors of massive use that go from the subsoil to the first floor. Throughout the building, the generous circulations organize informal meeting places that promote exchange among students.
On the lower floors are the larger spaces such as classrooms, dining room, library and workshops that need great depth of floor. The possibility of incorporating light through patios and skylights on the upper floors allowed the university's extensive program of academic and institutional offices to be housed there. In this way the internal offices and the open space also benefit from natural light.
