Amington Youth SpacesThis innovative design for youth shelter was developed in partnership with the local young people to act as a physical focus for the positive work that is taking place in Amington near Tamworth, UK.The young people were instrumental in the development of the initial concept through a series of three, hands on and artistic consultations. These sessions with the local young people gave the project a drive and creative momentum that fed through the design process into the realized shelter. The shelter is located at the centre of a previously disused area of wasteland that has been enhanced over a number of years to provide a habitat for wildlife and encourage rare species. The landscape around the new shelter is designed as an education resource for the local young people and wider community. The young people in the area were keen that an element of the surrounding natural landscape was expressed in the form of the new shelter. The dynamic form is inspired by a maple leaf that has been folded to create shelter, enclosure and seating. Following on from the initial ideas proposed by the youngsters, Sjlander da Cruz Architects and Buro Happold Engineers developed the design, bringing together the dynamism of the cantilevered form with innovative structural solutions to achieve the initial vision. The shelter was fabricated from steel and concrete, robust materials to withstand the elements and the constant use by the young people. Since its completion the shelter has become a positive landmark within the local community, becoming a shelter, and a sculpture within the landscape.
