Commissioned by the United States Department of Defense Dependent Schools Europe (DoDDS-E), Swanke Hayden Connell Architects, together with Team G.A.U.S. of Stuttgart, has designed two new state of the art schools outside of Stuttgart, Germany. The new facilities include a 150,000 sq. ft. (14,000 sm) high school and a 93,000 sq ft / 8,600 sq m elementary school located on a sloping site. The scheme integrates the buildings into the wooded landscape by creating a boulevard, a connective space between the two schools where varied outdoor spaces interact with the indoor learning environment. The small courtyards between classroom wings are envisioned as spaces where a variety of informal learning activities will occur. The cafeteria is the single shared space between the schools. Its transparent east and west facades open up to the boulevard allowing it to continue to the sports fields below. While the boulevard is located at the existing grade, the new elementary school follows the topography of the challenging site by stepping down to the south. As an indicator of DoDEA's commitment to environmental responsibility and stewardship, this project is designed to LEED-Silver Rating and willbe seeking certification under USGBC LEED for Schools New Construction.
