Amaze Restaurant is situated on the corner of Sixth Ave and Main Rd in the leafy suburb of Walmer, Port Elizabeth. It was an opportunity to do something a bit different. Working closely with the architect and contractor allowed us to create a building far removed from the ever too common “Port Elizabeth house conversion”.When we acquired the property the existing house had already been stripped of its heritage during a previous Tuscan wannabe renovation, which opened the door for a more radical approach this time around.Careful planning by the architect insured that the transformation from “house” to restaurant premises was done in an efficient and cost effective way. The required plan was achieved mostly within the constraints of the existing structure. The necessary flow to accommodate the workings of an eatery was achieved through substantial remodelling of the interior. Many walls were removed with very few new walls being built. Existing services were almost completely retained. Despite the minimal structural additions the soul of building has been changed dramatically. The once dark, compartmentalized interior is now light and spacious.Further careful planning has also made it possible to operate the premises without the need for air-conditioning. Indigenous plants were incorporated in the landscaping to offer shade as well as visual appeal. The previously fence and gated business property has been transformed into an open and inviting contemporary building that meets all the requirements of its intended new purpose as a restaurant and also allows for other uses in future.
