AMANDLA EduFootball is an international NPO based in Cape Town tackling social inequality in South Africa’s townships with its combination of education and football development, provided through the innovative Safe-Hub model that creates a safe place for personal development and learning with proven reduction in crime and positive effect on exam results. Initiated in association with two major players in the sports for development arena, Tsogo Sun and the Oliver Kahn Foundation, the new Safe-Hub centre was designed by dhk architects.
The design of the new Safe-Hub takes the form of a sports pavilion that faces both the street and field, providing a connection to the community and acting as a gateway to the safe space provided by the Safe-Hub programme. The building includes a youth centre with café, changing facilities and offices for AMANDLA’s development programmes and other NGOs in a simple and cost-effective construction that doesn’t compromise on design quality.
The building is formed by three main elements; a robust ground floor building, an upper level of a more lightweight construction with timber cladding and glazed walls and a carapace-like roof that encloses the upper level. The ground floor comprises a reception with access control, changing rooms and café with outdoor seating terrace. The upper level provides offices for AMANDLA’s team and their counselling/development programmes as well as shared space for other NGOs. A covered walkway along the upper level forms a viewing platform, and the full height glazed wall provides the offices with ample daylight and views to the field.
The Diepsloot Safe-Hub will be the third AMANDLA Safe-Hub in South Africa, developed with the support of two major players in the sports development arena, Tsogo Sun and the Oliver Kahn Foundation.
