The Amagansett Food Institute was looking for a home base of operations. A building with multipurpose functionality where an educational space, demonstration kitchen, commercial kitchen, event space, farmers market, cafe, offices and distribution center for local farming, fishing and viticulture could coexist.
AFI’s mission is to be a transplantable model for organizations seeking to bring communities closer to their food source. Berg Design’s proposal encourages AFI’s building to lead by example. Berg Design’s feasibility study focuses on creating a sustainable, LEED certified, modern building, which references the agricultural building vernacular. The building’s plan echoes the openness that the organization was founded on. The north-facing glass of the multi-purpose event space looks out on actively farmed fields.
