Located on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Casa Alta is a summer and weekend residence situated 90 km northwest of Santiago, Chile. The surrounding landscape is characterized by abundant native flora and fauna and is renowned for its remarkable natural beauty.
Beyond taking advantage of the magnificent views, the client placed special importance on creating spaces that could accommodate both family life and a vibrant social scene.
The site chosen for the house presented certain regulatory restrictions, which defined the maximum dimensions of the main volume: a 22 x 9-meter box elevated above the ground, leaving the access level open. The public areas are located on the ground floor, which is reached through a 15 x 15-meter courtyard. This courtyard hosts most of the social activities and provides shelter from the strong winds coming from the ocean. It connects seamlessly with the interior through retractable windows that disappear into the walls, allowing for a fluid relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces.
This spatial integration extends to the terrace, where the pool, jacuzzi, and a large viewing deck are located. Thus, the three areas —courtyard, house, and terrace— remain visually connected and can be used as a continuous space when desired.
The second floor is dedicated to the bedrooms, each equipped with its own bathroom and private balcony offering panoramic views, creating independent and autonomous spaces reminiscent of a boutique hotel experience.
The house features a mixed structural system: reinforced concrete walls and slabs supported by steel columns sustain the main volume. The slab formwork was made with wooden boards laid along the length of the house. The steel columns were intentionally oxidized and then sealed, resulting in a controlled, aged finish.
On the ground level, the service volume is clad entirely in stone with gray and copper hues, complementing the concrete elements and the grooved raulí wood used on the second-floor façade.
