This design centred on creating a family home for four, emphasising comfort over grandeur. The goal was to craft a space that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings, evoking a sense of belonging to the alpine landscape. Drawing inspiration from the region’s agricultural heritage, the design offers a contemporary take on the traditional Central Otago hay barn, characterised by its single-pitched ‘farm shed’ roofs.
Nestled within the breathtaking alpine scenery, the home features distinct pavilions strategically positioned to frame stunning ridgeline views. High windows in the living area celebrate the magnificent Remarkables mountain range, allowing natural light to flood the interior. The use of natural materials and earthy tones strengthens the connection to the environment.
Inside the living wing, an expansive open-plan layout encompasses the kitchen, living, dining, fireplace, and study, complemented by a mezzanine that provides versatile living options. Calm white surfaces enhance the interplay of light and shadow, while a palette of raw concrete, cedar, and dark-painted walls infuses the built-in fire ‘snug’ with warmth and intimacy. The design immerses residents in the mountainous landscape while offering a cozy retreat perfect for enjoying a glass of pinot at the end of the day.
