The design for this Wanaka home embraces it’s relatively challenging, irregular-shaped site. By laying the circulation diagonally across the plan we were able to open up the spaces where needed, and squeeze down where not. A similar geometry was applied to the roofline, which tilts upwards to draw views and sunlight into the home. The home’s orientation on the site provides sheltered, private outdoor areas for a young family, in addition to the panoramic views.
With a Passive House builder as Client, priority was paid to health and comfort, and key high-performance features and thoughtful detailing have been integrated into the design to minimise the future energy consumption of the occupants.
Aesthetics pay homage to the humble kiwi bach or crib, the building form synonymous with New Zealand’s outdoor adventure lifestyle. Building forms are bold, robust and practical yet warm and inviting within. Internally, modest plywood joinery enforces the emotional connection with the crib, where spaces welcome you to touch and inhabit them.
