The award-winning Alma Clark Glass Hall residential community celebrates design justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. The 117,000 SF facility includes student suites and more traditional bedrooms with private, single-user bathrooms and showers, as well as common amenities including lounges, community kitchens, a reflection/spiritual space, study rooms, and multi-purpose areas.
Utilizing design justice principles to elevate marginalized student voices, the concept of a "shared journey" emerged as a statement about the creation of an inclusive and accessible journey for all students to navigate the 80-foot hillside to campus. Along the shared journey, transparency, lines of sight, and acoustics became of utmost importance to support successful navigation of space for all, including those with physical, emotional, or cognitive disabilities.
Named after the first Black woman to attend WWU in 1906, Alma Clark Glass Hall also celebrates Black culture through active engagement during the design process, intentional residential programming supporting "Black Affinity Housing," and colorful murals along the shared journey showcasing Black history and food culture to celebrate students' shared identity, safe and welcoming community, and academic growth and success.
